Reading habit guide

How to read more books without turning it into homework.

Read a little more often, not perfectly. A book habit works when the next page is easy to reach and someone notices when you come back.

1. Pick the next book before you finish this one

The gap between books is where a reading habit disappears. Keep one book ready in your library and make the first session short enough that you can begin without negotiating with yourself.

2. Set a daily floor you can meet on a bad day

Ten minutes counts. A smaller floor makes it easier to keep the chain intact, and you can always read longer when you want to. Use the reading goal calculator to turn that time into a pace.

3. Make the session visible

A timer removes the vague question of whether you read enough. Start one when you sit down and stop when you are done. Your reading timer can make the small session feel complete.

4. Put other readers nearby

A reading habit is easier to return to when it is shared. Read in a fire, set a quiet time with friends, or try a silent book club. The point is not a competition. It is a reason to show up again.
