Speed reading trainer

Train your reading speed

Words flash one at a time so your eyes stay still and your pace climbs. Pick a passage or paste your own.

What is RSVP speed reading?

RSVP (rapid serial visual presentation) is a speed reading method that flashes words one at a time in a fixed spot, so your eyes stay still instead of moving across lines. Removing eye movement lets you push your reading pace higher with practice.

How RSVP helps you read faster

Normal reading spends time on eye movements between words (saccades) and on re-reading (regressions). RSVP removes both by showing one word at a time in the same place, with the pivot letter highlighted so your eye has a fixed point to fixate on.

This trainer lets you set a target words-per-minute, then raise it as you get comfortable. Because the words come to you, the main variable is how fast your brain can process them, which is exactly the skill you are training.

The honest limits of RSVP

RSVP is excellent for easy prose and for pushing your pace, but it has a real trade-off: it prevents you from glancing back at earlier words, which matters for dense or complex text. Rayner and colleagues (2016) found that comprehension of difficult material suffers when regressions are blocked.

So treat the trainer as practice, not proof you have unlocked 900 wpm reading. Use it to raise your comfortable pace on straightforward text, then verify with the speed reading test that your comprehension is keeping up.

How the speed reading trainer works

  1. 1

    Choose your text

Pick one of the classic book excerpts, or paste any article or chapter you want to read faster.

  2. 2

    Set your pace

Set a target speed in words per minute. It starts from your speed test result if you have taken it.

  3. 3

    Read and push

Words flash one at a time with the pivot letter highlighted. Play, pause, and nudge the speed up as your comfort grows.

Frequently asked questions

What is RSVP reading?
RSVP stands for rapid serial visual presentation. It flashes words one at a time in a single fixed position, so your eyes do not move across the page. It is the method behind most speed reading apps and word-at-a-time readers.
Does RSVP actually make you read faster?
Yes, for a while and within limits. By removing eye movement and re-reading, RSVP lets you raise your pace on easy text. It works less well for dense material, where glancing back at earlier words aids comprehension.
What is a good words-per-minute to train at?
Start near your measured reading speed, often 250 to 400 wpm, and raise it in small steps. Pushing to 500 or 600 wpm is realistic for practice on familiar prose; going far beyond that usually costs comprehension.
Can I use the trainer on my own text?
Yes. Paste any article, email, or book chapter and the trainer flashes it word by word at your chosen speed. It is a practical way to get through your own reading faster, not just a demo passage.
