Speed reading test

How fast do you read?

Most people read 200 to 300 words a minute. This measures your real pace, comprehension included, in about a minute.

What is a speed reading test?

A speed reading test measures how many words per minute (wpm) you read, and how much you actually understand. You read a passage, answer a few questions, and get an effective reading speed that only counts the words you comprehended.

Reading levelSpeedWhat it means
DevelopingUnder 200 wpmCommon for dense or unfamiliar material.
Average200 to 300 wpmWhere most adults read silently.
Above average300 to 400 wpmReachable with focused practice.
Fast400 to 600 wpmStrong readers on familiar prose.
Very fast600+ wpmPossible, but comprehension usually drops.

What is the average reading speed?

Most adults read silently at 200 to 300 words a minute. Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies put the average nearer 238 wpm for non-fiction and 260 wpm for fiction, slower than the 300 wpm that most tools assume.

Reading speed is not a single number. It shifts with the difficulty of the text, your familiarity with the subject, and whether you are reading for gist or for detail. The bands below are a realistic guide for adult prose.

Why comprehension matters more than raw speed

Raw words per minute is easy to inflate by skimming. This test scales your speed by a short comprehension check, so the number you get is your effective reading speed: the pace at which you actually absorb what you read.

The research is clear that speed and comprehension trade off. Rayner and colleagues (2016) found that claims of reading well above 500 to 600 wpm with full understanding do not hold up, because the eyes and brain have real processing limits. An honest speed reading test respects that.

How the speed reading test works

  1. 1

    Read the passage

Read a short book excerpt at your natural pace. A timer starts when you begin and stops when you finish.

  2. 2

    Answer three questions

Answer three quick comprehension questions about the passage you just read.

  3. 3

    Get your effective speed

See your raw words per minute, your comprehension, and your effective reading speed, plus how many books that pace could finish in a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reading speed?
For adult prose, 200 to 300 words a minute is average, 300 to 400 is above average, and 400 to 600 is fast. Above roughly 600 wpm, comprehension usually falls, so a fast number only counts if you still understand the text.
What is the average reading speed in words per minute?
Around 238 words a minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, based on Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 reading studies. Many popular estimates use 300 wpm, which runs faster than the evidence supports.
Is speed reading real, or a myth?
The technique is real and you can train from around 250 to 400 wpm with practice. The myth is reading a book in an hour at 1000+ wpm with full comprehension. Research by Rayner et al. (2016) shows speed and understanding trade off, so extreme claims do not hold up.
How is effective reading speed calculated?
Effective reading speed is your raw words per minute multiplied by your comprehension. If you read 500 wpm but understand two thirds of the passage, your effective speed is about 333 wpm. It rewards understanding, not skimming.
How can I read faster without losing comprehension?
Reduce subvocalization, stop re-reading lines, and widen the chunks of text your eyes take in. A word-at-a-time trainer that flashes words in a fixed spot removes eye movement, which is one honest way to push your pace while checking that comprehension holds.
