How to Focus on Reading When Your Mind Keeps Wandering
Try one short section with notifications silenced and a clear stopping point. If your attention drifts, return to the last idea you understood rather than pushing through unread pages.

Remove the distraction you keep choosing
Put your phone out of reach, or use Do Not Disturb if the book is on it. Pick one change rather than rebuilding your whole workspace.
Choose a manageable piece
Read a scene, a few pages or a short timed session. Decide where you can pause before starting. You can continue if you are absorbed.
Give the section a question
For a story, ask what the character wants. For nonfiction, ask what the author is explaining. Use the question to notice when you lose the thread.
Check in instead of forcing it
If you cannot explain the last paragraph, slow down or reread it. If you are tired, stop and pick another time. More minutes are not always useful minutes.
Match the distraction to one change
- I check every notification
- Silence alerts before opening the book
- I keep planning other tasks
- Write the task down, then return to the line
- I lose track of the argument
- Summarize the last paragraph aloud
- My eyes keep closing
- Pause and choose a more alert time
A few quick answers
Should I read with music?
Try silence and then a familiar background sound. Keep whichever makes it easier for you to follow the text. There is no required setup.
Should I use a timer?
Use it if having a clear endpoint helps you start. Stop watching the clock once you begin, or read to a chapter break instead.
Do I need to read faster?
No. Choose a pace that lets you follow the meaning. Speed is a separate goal from understanding the page.
