Hardcover vs Goodreads
HardcoverA connected library
Track books and explore other readers' shelves.
GoodreadsA shelf of books
Keep shelves, browse reviews and follow friends.
Both services offer book tracking, reviews and reader discovery. Consider Hardcover if you want to explore its lists, tags and library visibility choices. Keep Goodreads if its reviews and the people you follow already help you choose books. Hardcover documents Goodreads imports and has announced released data export; neither statement guarantees a lossless round trip.

Consider Hardcover if
- You want to try its lists, tags and reader-library discovery.
- Its documented profile visibility choices fit how you want to share.
- You are willing to audit imported fields before replacing your main record.
Consider Goodreads if
- People or groups you follow are a reason to keep the account.
- Its shelves and reviews already answer your book-selection questions.
- Changing your main library would add work without solving a missing task.
Make the choice with one book
Try a representative book and explore the people or lists you would actually follow. Another social library is useful when it improves a real discovery or record-keeping task, not simply because its interface is different.
If you import into Hardcover, keep Goodreads and the original file until the destination is useful on its own. Keeping both is a valid outcome, provided you decide which account owns your finished-book list.
Audit five fields before replacing your library
Use a small set of records that expose differences: a finished book, an unfinished one, a custom shelf/list and a reread if you have one. This checklist is a suggested audit, not an import we performed.
- Identity and status: confirm the edition, format and whether each title is read, reading, planned or unfinished.
- Ratings and dates: compare values and dates, including separate reads if those matter to you.
- Shelves, lists and review text: check the actual mapping and visibility. A list name or correct book count does not prove everything transferred.
The five fields are identity, status, rating, dates and personal context (lists/reviews). Export schema and destination parity remain untested.
Before moving your library
Hardcover's publisher documents Goodreads import in its Android listing. Its official export request was marked Released in August 2025 with a link to account exports. This establishes an announced outbound path, not the exact fields or a successful round trip. Check the current signed-in controls, download a backup if available to you, and verify the fields you need. Do not assume Hardcover lists will become Goodreads shelves automatically.
