How to Write a Book Review: A Short Template and Example
Tell the next reader what kind of book this is, what worked for you, and who might enjoy it. Support your opinion with a detail instead of retelling the plot.
A short review template
[Title] by [author] is a [genre or subject] book about [brief premise]. What stood out to me was [specific feature], because [reason or spoiler-free detail]. I found [limitation or different preference], although readers who like [quality] may feel differently. I would recommend it to [kind of reader]. Spoiler note or disclosure, if needed: [details]
Copy into your own notes or print a blank sheet. Nothing to sign up for.

What kind of book is it?
Be specific
What shaped your reaction?

Who is it for?
Name the book and its starting point
Include the title and author. Give a brief sense of the premise or subject, without walking through the story scene by scene.
Choose one or two things to discuss
Talk about pacing, voice, characters, explanations or evidence. Explain how a particular feature affected your experience rather than listing vague praise.
Distinguish preference from a problem
A slow opening might frustrate you and suit another reader. Say what happened and why it mattered to you. Do not assume everyone reads for the same thing.
Finish with the reader in mind
Name who might enjoy the book. Label spoilers clearly or keep them out. If this is an assignment or publication, follow its required format and disclosure rules.
A short review of an invented book
- Setup
- This is a small-town mystery about a missing archive.
- Specific reaction
- I liked the dry dialogue, but the large cast was hard to follow.
- Recommendation
- Try it if you enjoy patient puzzles more than fast action.
A few quick answers
How long should a book review be?
For a personal recommendation, a short paragraph can be useful. A publication or teacher may set a word count; follow that instead.
Should I include a star rating?
Only if the platform requires one or you find it useful. Your explanation gives the number its context.
Can I review a book I did not finish?
Be clear that you stopped and say where, if relevant. Do not make claims about the ending or sections you have not read.
